How Do You Choose LED Strip Lights?
LED strip lights are becoming a popular choice for both residential and commercial premises. These lights are energy efficient and have a wider range of colour hues and brightness. Movilume’s LED strip lights can be changing the lighting can be controlled using a smartphone app, for different moods and occasions. How do you pick the correct LED strip lighting for your needs? Movilume advises clients to make these considerations:
Lighting properties (Lumen, CCT and CRI)
This is the brightness of a light as perceived by the human eye. While conventional lighting like incandescent bulbs use wattage to rate brightness, the lumen rating of an LED determines its brightness. This is measured in lumen per foot of LED strip. Different lighting needs require different levels of brightness. Here is a rough guide:
- Accent and Mood Lighting- ~ 156 – 350 lumens/foot
- Under cabinet Lighting – ~ 175 – 525
- Task Lighting at a low distance from light source- ~ 280 – 437
- Task lighting at a higher distance from the light source- ~ the 344 – 687
- Indirect lighting in e.g. hotel lobby – ~ 375 – 562
- Industrial lighting e.g. signage – ~ 500 – 950
Color temperature (CCT)
CCT stands for Correlated Color Temperature. This is a concept that is applied to white light, which is what determines the intensity of a light. CCT is measured in Kelvins (K). CCT ranges from warm white light (lowest) to pure white (highest). Residential LEDs are on the lower end of the spectrum (~2400K) while industrial lighting goes up to 6200K.
Colour Rendering Index (CRI)
This is a concept used to describe how a light makes different colours come out. This is measured from 1-100. At the highest end (100) the light makes an object look just like they would in sunlight. Residential lighting usually needs 80-90 CRI. High CRI (over 90) is used in industrial applications, photography and cinema.
Number of LEDs per meter
LEDs are usually placed on strips of 5 meters. Different companies place different numbers ranging from 60-120 per meter. You should measure the length of lighting distance before buying. For longer distances, it is better to buy by the reel.
LED strip lights will also have the wattage rating to indicate their power consumption. Naturally, higher rated LEDs are more powerful. It is important to establish if the wattage is per meter or per foot. For safety purposes, you should also establish if your LED voltage matches your power supply.
